I congratulate the scholar Victor Slyotov for discovering that my painting "Dancing Mountains" is a copy of "Recluse in a Mountain Abode" by Kuo Hsi (1072 AD). I signed my painting to avoid confusion; the "original" is not signed. I admit my irresponsible laziness not mentioning that my work is just a copy. Frankly, it never occurred to me, that my painting would not be seen as a copy of one of the greatest treasures of Chinese culture.
In the Western Art World a painter who copies someone's painting is finished. Dishonored. A plagiarist and a fake. In the (traditional) East a real painter is expected to be fluent in all the styles of the past; his copying is seen as a dialogue between him and the ancient master—superficially, an exchange between minds, on a deeper level, an exchange of minds.
By Western standards of originality the copy is worthless, or at best amusing, since it is neither new nor unique. In the East the copy is considered original if it "transmits the true spirit of antiquity", if it comes from "the source". That source is not Kuo Hsi, but the spring of consciousness from which both Kou Hsi and I drink to infuse life-force into our creations. Translated into plain language: Who cares if it is a canary or the son of a canary (or a copy of a copy). The question is: DOES IT SING?
Critics rather avoid answering the question "Does it sing?". Instead, they talk about "authenticity"; that's easier. If Jan Zaremba paints in the style of Kuo Hsi, then he is not original and therefore a fake. Well, her is news for you: The painting in the National Palace Museum in Taipe was not painted by Kuo Hsi (1072); it is a copy by Li Tsai (about 1435 AD). Who knows if there ever was an original. Did the Chinese cut Li Tsai's hand off? No, they invited him to the court of the Ming Emperor. Did the scholars of the National Palace Museum throw away Li Tsai's painting, when they found out (1989) that it was "only a copy"? No. They treasure it.
